Swahili, also known by its local name Kiswahili, is the native language of the Swahili people, who are primarily found in Tanzania, Kenya and Mozambique. It is the official and national language of both Kenya and Tanzania and extensively spoken in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and parts of Somalia, Rwanda, Burundi and Mozambique. Swahili is one of the most widely spoken African languages with a total population of about 200 million speakers worldwide ranking it among the top 10 most widely spoken languages.
South Africa made it one of the languages taught in schools 2020. It was made Uganda’s second official language in 2022. It is also one of Rwanda’s official languages since 2023. In addition, it is an official language of several international bodies like the African Union (AU), the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Therefore, it is imperative to know some common Swahili words and phrases to make travelling, living and working in East, Central and Southern Africa fun and worthwhile. A big advantage of the Swahili language is that the pronunciation of the Swahili words is exactly the same way they are written.

” I’ve been taking Swahili lessons with Nairobi Swahili Enterprises for four years and what I like about them is that they adapt the lessons to your needs and wants. They can do formal Swahili with grammar and homework or focus more on conversation if you like it a bit more casual.” Rachel Jones.
