How to get a phone
As the phone system is notorious for it´s lack of reliability, you are better off getting a mobile phone. Right now there are four companies that offer mobile services namely Orange, Safaricom, Yu and Zain previously known as Kencell.

There are mainly two tariffs in Zain namely Vuka and Umoja. Umoja tariff charges are as below;

Benefits include:
- Kshs 8 for Zain subscribers (all days of the week)
- Kshs 12 across all networks.
- Kshs 3 per minute to 10 friends and family all day everyday.*
- No Call Set up fee
- Per second billing

Orange mobile has a tariff called Niaje which you can call across all network for just 8/- and to Orange and Telkom landline for 4/- anytime anywhere.It is the cheapest mobile phone that you can use to call landlines.

Safaricom has a tariff called Supa ongea, a tariff where the price moves with the lowest price being 0.80 shillings per minute and highest being 8 shillings per minute.
- The base tariff will be Ksh 8.00 per minute. The discounts range from 0% to 90% meaning the lowest calling charge will be 80 cents.
- Per second billing applies.
- The discounts are applicable to Safaricom to Safaricom calls only.
- SMS remain at Ksh. 3/50. All other costs remain unchanged
- Calls to other local network is Ksh.15 /- and SMS is Ksh.5/-
- The validity period for each single discount value available at anyone time and location shall be at multiples of one hour with a minimum of one hour
- The discounts will NOT be offered when customers are roaming.

Yu mobile services are the cheapest so far in town because they have a tariff called amua which has a standard rate of 6/- to all networks.This has made so many guys to have more than one lines to cut on cost. The competition is stiff among mobile services providers and this has made them improve their services and calling charges to drop drastically.
